I used to eat everything, and I still do. But few months earlier I started -seriously- following a different diet approach. Last Ramadan, I took a decision to tighten my hands around my stomach’s neck. Since then, I lost around 6 kilos. It seems like I’m sticking to my new eating habit forever. The idea of following a healthy diet or an eating habit for a long time, without cheating, was first introduced to me by a friend who lived in the US for more than 20 years. He’s in his sixties. During the time he lived there, he followed a constant eating habit which didn’t change across the years. The energy he’s gotten in his hands, tongue, and mind are quite similar to that found in a young fresh man in his twenties –that’s me ;]
Allow me at first to say that you shouldn’t be a knight of the round table to decide whether fresh lemon juice or black tea is healthier than a can of Coke (or Red Bull). I say that though I drink Coke and Red Bull on occasions.
Not following a healthy diet can cause you mental and physical problems like: fatigue, stress, laziness, negative thinking, indigestion, weight gain, headache, insomnia, back problems, etc.. and it doesn’t stop here. All causes are linked together.
I do have some recommendations based on what I read or experienced, as well as habits I naturally inherited -being brought up in the countryside:
1- Thou shalt not eat white bread. Go for brown bread in stead. Rationale: Healthier & facilitates digestion.
2- Fresh veggies are a must with meals. Consider to have olives and pickles. Drink fresh juice or yogurt (laban) after of before a meal by -say- 20 minutes. Rationale: Helps in digestion and keeps your stomach happy. Lose weight!
3- Pepsi is bad. Highly condensed with sugar. Why not try a cup of tea after your meal? P.S. I hate the fact that most fast food restaurants oblige people to buy Coke with their meals. Rationale: Fast food chains are evil. LOL!
4- Use brown sugar. Gradually try lessening the amount of sugar you use in your food and drinks. You’ll be amazed to find out after a while that a 1 tea spoon of sugar will make your cup of tea more lovely than before. Same with other drinks. You’ll get used to it! Also consider substituting sugar with dates, figs, or honey. They contain simplified sugar, which is easily absorbed by blood. Take any of them before drinking your tea. No need then to add sugar to your mug. Rationale: Why take more sugar when less is okay?
5- Eat EVERYTHING. That’s what most sane nutritionists say. Even coke is okay if you drink it in a systematized and regular basis. This also includes chocolate, chips, and fast food. Just be rational and self-controlled. Always stop eating before you feel that you’re stomach is FULL. Rationale: You’re the Maestro of you wills.
6- Drink a lot of water, 20 minutes before or after a meal, before sleeping, and in the early morning. Rationale: It hinders you from eating more food. Increases metabolism. Maintains low blood pressure.
7- Be aware of your daily fat intake. Fast food meals are stuffed with fat. Eat them less often. Watch out how many Pringles you eat a day. Consider broiling potato or even cooking it in a microwave [check this] in stead of frying it. Rationale: Fat = gaining wait, which means your body needs more energy to keep functioning.
8- Do Sports. Walk. No need to build muscles and raise weight if your eating habit is fine, unless you’re a gangster or a swimmer. Rationale: Move your muscles to burn excess calories & fat.
9- Have a snack two hours before sleeping. Keep it light (milk, labneh, cheese, cake, veggies etc..), but not hamburger and coke -which you probably had them on lunch. Rationale: Your stomach needs to rest while you’re sleeping.
10- Whenever you feel hungry between meals, train yourself to eat fruits and vegetables or perhaps some biscuits & juice. They give you the appropriate boost of energy your body and mind needs. Rationale: No meals between meals.
Now by time, you’ll find yourself being used to a certain healthy eating habit. Say your eating habit is -theoretically- on twitter? It won’t be easy to unfollow it!
Lastly -and this is not a recommendation but an invitation- please visit plantism.com [in English] or zira3a.net [in Arabic]. Either of these websites might inspire you to plant your own food & enjoy eating the utmost healthy veggies & fruits; something I did enjoy before coming to the UAE.
